May Is Women Riders Month

Recent years have seen more and more women motorcyclists. Female riders have been enjoying this hobby since the 1920s, but they’ve become more and more common in the past 10 years or so. During the month of May, it’s time to celebrate women riders!

What Percentage of Motorcycle Riders Are Female?

The Motorcycle Industry Council recently surveyed thousands of motorcycle owners across the United States. The survey results show that women make up about 19 percent of motorcycle owners — or about one in five owners!

When you break it down by generation, the percentage goes up even more. For owners in Generation X, women make up 22 percent of motorcyclists. For the Millennial generation, it’s 26 percent, and the study provided even more information that you can learn about motorcyclists.

We’re so excited to see more women join the motorcycling community. With the freedom, excitement, adventure and fun that comes with motorcycling, this hobby has never been exclusively for men.

Changing Demographics

The number of women Harley riders and those on other motorcycle types has been growing over the past 10 years or so. About 10 years ago, the number of women who owned motorcycles was only about 10 percent.

So, what’s the reason for the rise in women motorcycle owners? Since younger women are buying motorcycles more frequently than women in older generations, the percentage of women in motorcycle ownership will go up. If the number of men who buy motorcycles stays about the same, the ratio will change.

We anticipate the percentage of female motorcyclists to continue rising and expanding. In the next few years, we may even see women making up one in four motorcycle owners.

Women Motorcyclist Communities
